Local government units (LGUs) across Western Visayas are gearing up for a potential tourism surge with the recent establishment of the Negros Island Region (NIR). This development has reignited focus on bolstering key tourist destinations within the region, aiming to capitalize on the economic and cultural potential of the area.
The Negros Island Region, created in 2024, was established to foster better administrative coordination and promote regional development. Comprising the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, the NIR aims to streamline governance and stimulate economic growth. Western Visayas, known for its rich history and diverse geography, has long been a treasure trove of cultural and natural attractions, albeit with underdeveloped tourism infrastructure.
According to DOT regional director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez, the Western Visayas region has a lot of areas that have the potential to be tourist destinations. LGUs are encouraged to examine these areas and reach out to the DOT for assistance in developing them into viable tourist hubs.
“(We) will also be encouraging our LGUs (local government units) to discover more destinations. They can have exploratory assessments of destinations, which we can develop as a tourist destination,” said Rodriguez. “They are also very big on nature, which I believe our Western markets are very attracted to. Also, culture and food that is unique to them.”
Historical landmarks such as Iloilo’s Miagao Church and the Ruins in Talisay are great tourist sites in Western Visayas. The region boasts natural attractions that include the pristine, internationally renowned beaches of Boracay and Guimaras. It is also home to the scenic mountains of Antique, as well as cultural and heritage sites like the Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo and the Manggahan Festival in Guimaras.
Economic and Cultural Implications
Rodriguez acknowledged the unique tourism offerings of Negros Occidental and Bacolod City, expressing hope for continued cultural and historical ties despite the administrative separation.
“They cannot be separated totally, except that in terms of boundaries, there’s already the Negros Island Region,” she continued. “So we are waiting for the drafting of the NIR; the office of DOT will support every tourism program they will initiate.”
The proposed developments are expected to bring significant economic benefits to Western Visayas. Job creation in the tourism and hospitality sectors is anticipated, alongside a surge in revenue for local businesses. An increase in regional GDP is also projected as tourist inflows boost spending.
Culturally, these developments will help preserve and promote local heritage. Festivals, traditional crafts, and regional cuisine will gain wider recognition, fostering a sense of pride and continuity among residents. Opportunities for cultural exchange will also arise, enriching both locals and visitors alike.
The long-term vision for Western Visayas is to become a leading destination for eco-tourism and cultural tourism in the Philippines. Future projects could include more integrated regional tourism circuits and international marketing campaigns. Collaboration with the newly formed NIR and other neighboring regions is expected to foster a comprehensive and inclusive growth strategy.
