Tagudin, Ilocos Sur – In a significant milestone for regional infrastructure, Phase 1 of the Ambalayat Bridge project has been successfully completed, marking a crucial step towards enhancing connectivity in the province. The ambitious project, aimed at bridging communities and improving accessibility, is set to transform travel dynamics in this part of the Philippines.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced the completion of Phase 1, a vital segment of the P250 million Ambalayat Bridge project. This initiative is designed to replace existing river crossings, which have been a cause of concern during inclement weather, with a stronger infrastructure solution.

DPWH Regional Office I Director Ronnel M. Tan emphasized the project’s strategic importance, highlighting its role in facilitating safer and more efficient travel between Barangay Ambalayat and Barangay Pallogan. The 245.9-meter Ambalayat Bridge crossing the Amburayan River will also increase the safety of the local residents.
“Without this bridge, residents have to cross the Amburayan River through makeshift balsa or bangka just to reach the other side. Rainy or typhoon season worsen their situation as they had to wait for the water level to subside,” added Director Tan.
Residents previously endured a journey of up to an hour during peak conditions, now reduced to a mere two minutes, thanks to this modern infrastructure.
Ambalayat Bridge Project Funding
Funded under the 2022 General Appropriations Act (GAA), Phase 1 of the Ambalayat Bridge project represents an investment of P217.12 million. It includes essential construction elements like aggregate subbase courses, stone masonry, and an MSE retaining wall for slope protection, ensuring durability and safety.
Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the project are slated to commence, focusing on bridge approaches and additional flood control structures, bringing the total project cost to P250 million. Once fully completed, the Ambalayat Bridge will bolster local infrastructure resilience and contribute significantly to regional development efforts.
With Phase 1 now operational, attention turns to the forthcoming phases, promising further enhancements in connectivity and resilience. As Ilocos Sur moves forward with its infrastructure agenda, the Ambalayat Bridge stands as a testament to proactive development and community-centric progress.
